History

What is the Intermarque Concours d'Elegance?

  • A celebration of classic and marque cars
  • Competitions based on presentation, appearance, originality and excellence

The MG Car Club launched the first Intermarque Concours d'Elegance at the sunken gardens, Cornwall Park on December 1, 1972. Then as now, the event was an inter-club affair and MG became the first winner of the Inter-Club Challenge Shield. Honours also went to Alvis, Studebaker, Jowett, Riley, and Citroen Car Clubs.

Until 1981 MG and Jaguar dominated the Cornwall Park event. Then Porsche took the Shield and moved the rapidly growing show to Ellerslie. Today over 65 car clubs, leading new vehicle dealerships, sponsors and the restoration industry support the event.

Each year thousands of car enthusiasts and those who are simply curious spend the day browsing round the displays. There are now more honours - ranging from the coveted Intermarque Team Shield to Masters Class for individual vehicles and Best Display - the theme for which this year is nostalgic…" the way we were…"

Vehicles not only come from around the country but also the world - in 2003 for example we welcomed 27 Alvis owners and their cars from the UK.

It takes almost a year to put a show like this together. The winning club each year hosts the subsequent event with the support of other leading clubs.

Continuity, prcedure and judging is overseen by TACCOC, the Thoroughbred and Classic Car Club. The organising committee meets monthly.

Vehicles displayed will range from the early '20s through to the latest modern exotics, and will vary from Micro cars through to Utes and the most exotic cars in New Zealand.

Intermarque Concours around the world

A celebration of classic and marque cars - competitions based on presentation, appearance, originality and excellence. In the United States and Europe the attendance at such events is in the hundreds of thousands, the investment measured in millions.

Clearly New Zealand cannot hope to emulate such extravagant affairs, but with committed imaginative sponsors and the impressive foundations that we currently have, The New Zealand Classic Car Weekend and Intermarque Concours events will be the Blue Riband events of the New Zealand motoring calendar.

Your hosts for 2012 - the Auckland Mustang Car Club

In 2012 the Auckland Mustang Owners Club will be the show host having taken the Teams Event trophy in 2011. Continuity, procedure and judging is overseen by TACCOC, the Thoroughbred and Classic Car Club. The organising committee of elected and co-opted members of other car clubs meets monthly. As winners of the 2011 Team's event the Auckland Mustang Car Club is the 2012 NZ Classic Car Show host.

The competitions at Ellerslie encapsulate the love and enthusiasm owners have for their classic cars. The Concours d' Elegance celebrates the presentation, appearance, originality and excellence of the cars on show. Some are the finest example of their model in the world if not New Zealand.

If cars of beautiful form and function interest you, then come early in the day to Ellerslie in February. Join us who have a like mind, and enjoy a fantastic day.
