​Judging for the Teams Event, Masters Class and Survivors Class to the highest standard is carried out by a team of independent judges from the Thoroughbred And Classic Car Owners Club (TACCOC).

​For Teams and Masters Class events, cars must be at least 5 years old.  Cars for the Survivors Class must be at least 35 years old.

Judging is carried out in up to thirteen categories, each with their own judge or judges.  Cars are evaluated as follows to a maximum points award in each category.  You can see more detail by looking at the full results from previous years.

YOUR CLUB CAN WIN!

It is apparent to the organisers of the event that many of the clubs that regularly display cars on the day are not entering a team in Concours because they don't feel that their cars are up to the standard required, are not sure about preparing cars for the event or don't think their club would have the resources to host the next years event.  It can be seen from the standard of cars on club displays that many are good enough to take out prizes in the Teams, Masters or Survivors competitions and clubs don't need to be large to host the event because other clubs and service organisations are always willing to help.  And the payout for winning is a substantial boost for club funds - in the last few years it has been around $8,000

The Operating Principles & Competition Rules

Operating Principles are supplementary to the Rules of the Constitution (the Rules) and can only be modified with the majority approval of the Event’s Organising Committee (the Committee) after discussion at a Committee meeting and recorded as such in the minutes 

1. MISSION STATEMENT:
2. The Ellerslie Intermarque Concours d'Elegance and Classic Car Show Inc. (The Society) runs an annual event (The Event) open to the public, organised on behalf of motor vehicle clubs (the Clubs) by their representatives in order to allow those Clubs to display vehicles, promote their clubs and take part in friendly competitions.  In addition, the Event will display and promote the motor vehicle industry and its associated activities, to provide a broad spectrum of interest to the participating Clubs and the general public and to be regarded as a classic motor vehicle show in the broadest sense. 
3. NAME: 
4. The Event will be known as The Ellerslie Intermarque Concours d'Elegance and Classic Car Show or such other name relevant to the Mission Statement as determined by the Organising Committee.  This title may be amended to include the year and the name of a naming rights sponsor, e.g. “The 2024 Classic Cover Ellerslie Car Show” or similar.
5. COMMITTEE: 
6. The Committee is the committee of the Society appointed in accordance with Clause 4 of the Rules and whose role is defined under Clauses 8 and 9 of the Rules.
7. THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM) : 
8. The AGM shall be as defined under clause 21 of the Rules. 
9. FINANCIAL:  
10. Any cash surplus, after expenses and provision for the next year's event, will be distributed as follows to clubs complying with the Rules and Operating Principles and the Purpose and Mission Statement of the Society: 
11. The Committee Clubs - 70% to be shared to those Clubs with full (i.e. not co-opted) membership of the Committee in proportion to their representation on the Organising Committee
12. 30% to be shared equally by the other Clubs who participated in the immediate past Event in accordance with the Rules and Operating Principles.  
13. INCORPORATED SOCIETY: 
14. The Ellerslie Intermarque Concours and Classic Car Show Incorporated (registered number 2546539, (the Society) was incorporated on the 14th March 2011.  To view the Society’s Constitution click the button above 
15. DEFINITIONS: 
16. COMMITTEE: means the Committee appointed at the Annual General Meeting of the Society to organise the Event as per the Rules. 
17. CAR CLUB: means a group of enthusiasts representing a car marque or marques, or model of a marque, e.g. Jaguar, Consul Zephyr Zodiac (Ford), Model A (Ford), Horseless Carriage Club and the like.
18. ENTRANT:  
19. For competitions requiring car club membership, entry shall be by a registered and financial member of a car Club relating to the marque of the competing car, which must be owned by the entrant or related entity. 
20. For competitions not requiring car club membership, the owner of the competing car.
21. COMPETITION CAR ELIGIBILITY
22. A WOF and registered, road-legal car of a recognised marque, which must be at least five years old from the date of manufacture.  The competing car will be owned by the entrant, and if not, the Committee must be advised on the official entry form.  In those circumstances, acceptance of such a car will be solely at the discretion of the Committee and Chief Judge.  
23. To ensure the quality and internationally recognised standards achieved by the Event over its long history there a number of excluded vehicle categories:
24. Replicas and "specials”, except for entries into the Modified Class 
25. Commercial trucks, HGVs, pickups that are not unibody and are not derived from an equivalent model of car. Eg Ford F100 pickup and the like vehicles.
26. GENERAL RULES FOR ALL COMPETITIVE EVENTS: 
27. All entries must be received on the formal entry form via the official website on or before the date defined on the entry form and website.  
28. It should be noted that some competitions may have different closing dates for entries from others.
29. Only entries made via the official website will be accepted. 
30. Late entries will only be accepted at the discretion of the Organising Committee.
31. The organising committee reserves the right to alter the competition class of an entered vehicle to a more suitable competition class 
32. At least two number good quality photographs of the vehicle being entered shall accompany all entries via the on-line entry form. 
33. Each competing Club, or individual, must complete a declaration (on the entry form) stating that they will comply with both these Operating Principles and the Rules of the Constitution for the Event. 
34. On the day of the event competing cars must be in place by 8:45 am, all others must be in place by 9:15 am.  All cars (both competing and non-competing) must remain in their positions until 4:00 pm or such other time determined and advised by the Organising Committee and its Health and Safety Plan or that of the venue.
35. Clubs will be required to supply one knowledgeable member who must be available to answer questions from the judges should they require any information.  Other than that, no discussions are to be entered into with the judges. 
36. Each Club will be responsible for the security of its own cars. 
37. The Event will be held wet or fine. 
38. Participating Clubs will be supplied with passes for use by entrants and official helpers. 
39. All other Club members will pay normal public admission prices.  Children under 12 years of age are admitted free. 
40. The decisions of the Chief Judge and Committee are final and binding. 
41. The public will be admitted between the hours of 10:00am and 4:00pm, or as determined by the Committee. 
42. The Event’s organisers including Host Club and Committee accept no liability for vehicles entered into or displayed at the event. 
43. Cars may be trailered to the event but must be road-legal and be capable of being able to be driven to the judging area under their  own power – also refer to "Competition Car Eligibility" under clause 7.4 above.
44. All vehicles presented for judging must have their doors, sunroofs and windows closed and all doors, bonnet, boot and interior compartments unlocked.  Vehicles of open or drop head coupe configuration must have soft tops erected when presented for judging.  Boots should be emptied of tools, jacks and spare wheels which shall be separately displayed for judging
45. No preparation or cleaning of cars is permitted once judging has commenced apart from removal of dust and leaves etc that have fallen on the displays during the show. 
46. All vehicles entered in the Event must remain in position at the Event until the completion of presentation of prizes or 4:00pm, whichever comes later.  In the event of poor weather, the Organising Committee may advise that vehicles may leave earlier.
47. Judging  will be held at the time and venue stipulated by the Committee, as published in the media and in the official programme for the Event.   
48. All vehicles being entered for the competitions will be directed on the day by  Event officials for the marshalling area to the designated judging location at the venue.  All vehicles must be in position by 8:45am on the day. 
49. It is specifically required that between the hours of 09.30 and 16:00 on the day, competitors shall not move any vehicle within the controlled Ellerslie Event Area unless specifically authorised and escorted by a member of the Organising Committee.  
50. Any Club whether an entrant into any competitive event or not that does not comply with Clause 49 shall forfeit its right to receive any distribution or part distribution of funds arising from the event that year at the sole discretion of the Organising Committee.
51. Late arrival for Judging – if a vehicle is not in place for judging by the designated time for commencement of judging, the matter will be referred to the Chief Judge who may exercise his/her discretion and deduct up to 10 points from the score achieved. The Chief Judge’s decision on this matter shall be final.

61. ADDITIONAL RULES FOR TEAMS, MASTERS AND SURVIVOR CLASSES  
62. Entrants for the Teams event must own their own vehicle and must be members of a recognised car club.
63. In the event of excessive numbers of entries being received for Teams, Masters and Survivor Classes by the closing date notified on the Event’s website,  some entries may not be accepted for judging. This would be due to practical limitations on the number of cars that can be accommodated in the judging ring and the capacity of the judging team. If required, this exercise will be undertaken at the sole discretion of the Independent Chief Judge immediately after the closing date for entries and decisions immediately notified to the affected Club/Entrant.  The criteria for shortlisting will be in line with the criteria for judging, the purpose and mission statement and the good of the show.
64. In the event of low numbers of entries being received for Teams, Masters and Survivor Classes by the closing date notified on the Event’s website, the Chief Judge and Committee may extend the closing date until the maximum number of entries is received, notifying all Clubs if and when this occurs.
65. In the event the closing date is extended and the maximum number of entries is still not received prior to 15 January, entries to all competition entries will automatically close on this date, without notice.
66. ADDITIONAL RULES FOR TEAMS AND MASTERS CLASSES
67. Each judged car in Teams and Masters classes will have the inner front wheel removed and that portion of the car supported on an axle stand for the duration of the judging.  The car must be positioned in the ring to ensure that the axle stand and jack is positioned wholly on the pavement and not on the grass.  Note that some classes may be loaded into the ring clockwise and some may be anticlockwise and so it will not be known until the day which front wheel will be removed.
68. To protect the pavement/asphalt all jacking procedures must have a base board at least 300 x300mm in size and at least 19mm in thickness under the jack and axle stands (at least two required). The two base boards must be thick enough not to deflect under the weight of the car so as to ensure that the load from the axle stand and jack is distributed evenly to the pavement.  The base board, jack and axle stand must be provided by the owner of the car.
69. Prior to jacking , car must have hand brake applied and the car in low gear.
70. A suitable jack (preferably a trolley jack) is to be placed on top of the board in an appropriate place for lifting the car.  Wheel studs or nuts must be loosened before lifting the wheel off the ground.
71. Once the vehicle has reached sufficient height  to remove the wheel, the vehicle shall be lowered onto a suitable commercially made axle stand and the wheel removed.  Again the axle stand must have a suitable base board underneath it.
72. The removed wheel, nuts and hub cap will be judged so must be kept close to the car.  The original jack, wheel brace and tools will be judged separately and shall be separately displayed from the removed wheel.
73. No persons are to be under the car for any purpose whilst the car is jacked and/or on the axle stand.
74. The wheel shall be refitted in the reverse order as described above once judging is complete, ensuring that the nuts/studs are tightened once the vehicle is lowered.
75. ADDITIONAL RULES FOR THE TEAMS EVENT
76. An entry for this event will consist of two competing cars and named entrants (per Clause 7 Definitions).  One reserve competing car and entrant may be nominated on the entry form and substituted for any one of the competing cars prior to the start of judging. 
77. Age points will be awarded, one point for each year after five years of age, to a maximum of 40 points. 
78. In the event of a tie for any place, the winning team will be determined by countback of points on (a) Age, and if still tied then (b) Originality, and if still tied then by judged groups one to ten in sequence until the tie is broken. 
79. The winning club of the Teams event is obliged to fill the committee positions as such: two committee members for the year they will be the Host Club and one committee member for the following year to provide assistance to the new Host Club.  The second place getting club is obliged to fill committee positions as such: one committee member for the first year.
80. Prizes will be awarded as follows: 
81. The historically important perpetual Teams Shield, is to be engraved with the year and the name of the winning Club and be held by the winning Club for one year.  The winning Club will have the Team Shield engraved by a specialist company as instructed by the Organising Committee.
82.  Trophies will be awarded to each of the top three competing teams.
83.  An individual trophy will be awarded to the competing car scoring the highest points in the Teams Event. 
84. A certificate will be awarded to all competing clubs/entrants. 
85. Cash donations and sponsors product will be made as determined by the Committee.
86. An information board may be displayed but is not part of the judging for Teams Event
87. ADDITIONAL RULES FOR THE MASTERS CLASS EVENT 
88. Competing cars for the Masters Class will be judged individually and cannot be entered as part of the Teams Event in the same year. 
89. Entrants must own their own vehicle and may be members of a recognised car club but this is not mandatory.
90. Cars will be judged to the same criteria as for individual cars in the Teams event. 
91. In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined by countback of points on 
92. (a) Age, and if still tied then 
93. (b) Originality, and 
94. if still tied then by judged groups one to ten in sequence until the tie is broken 
95. Prizes will be awarded as follows:  
96. The perpetual trophy, to be engraved by the winner with the year and competing car, will be held by the winning entrant for one year. 
97. Trophies will be awarded to each of the top three competing cars.
98. A certificate will be awarded to all entrants. 
99. Cash donations and prizes of sponsors’ product(s) will be awarded as determined by the organising Committee.
100. ADDITIONAL RULES FOR THE SURVIVORS CLASS EVENT 
101. The Survivors Class is for unrestored vehicles with original bodywork, paint and upholstery.
102. Competing cars for Survivors Class cannot be entered as part of the Teams Event in the same year. 
103. Entrants must own their own vehicle and may be members of a recognised car club but this is not mandatory.
104. Cars must be at least 35 years old. 
105. Cars will be judged on Originality, Age, Condition, Preparation and History with a higher emphasis on originality and age than the Teams and Masters competitions
106. In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined by countback of points on 
107. (a) Age, and if still tied then 
108. (b) Originality, and 
109. if still tied then by judged groups one to ten in sequence until the tie is broken 
110. Prizes will be awarded as follows: - 
111. The perpetual trophy, to be engraved by the winner with the year and competing car, will be held by the winning entrant for one year.
112. Trophies will be awarded to each of the top three competing cars.
113. A certificate will be awarded to all entrants
114. Cash donations and prizes of sponsors’ product(s) will be awarded as determined by the organising Committee
115. ADDITIONAL RULES FOR THE BEST CLUB DISPLAY:
116. This competition event is open to all participating Clubs, but must not be commercially based for the purpose of promoting products or selling cars.  A display assessed by the Committee as commercial will be liable for a trade display charge and be ineligible for the competition. 
117. Cars/Vehicles entered for the Teams, Masters Class, Survivors Class, 30-40-50 competition or Modified Class events cannot be judged as part of the Club Display event in the same year
118. Cars less than five years old may only be used subject to the notification of, and approval by, the Committee, which must be satisfied that the vehicles are not being used for commercial display purposes. 
119. Display judging will be carried out by the sponsors representatives assisted by the Committee, and will take into account the criteria stipulated on the website
120. Prizes will be award awarded as follows: - 
121. Cash donations will be made for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners as determined by the Committee 
122. The perpetual trophy, to be engraved by the winning club with the year and winning Club, will be held by the winning Club for one year 
123. Trophies will be awarded to each of the top three competing Clubs.
124. Certificates will be awarded to the top six Clubs.
125. ADDITIONAL RULES FOR THE 30-40-50 COMPETITION:  
126. The 30-40-50 competition refers to the age of the car (more than 30 years), age of competitor (under 40 years of age) and the amount spent on their car, including purchase price ($50,000).
127. This competition is about the state of cleanliness and condition of a car. 
128. Originality or authenticity and the underside of the vehicle will not be judged.
129. Entrants must own their own vehicle and may be members of a recognised car club but this is not mandatory.
130. Vehicles must be over 30 years of age and extra points will be given for older cars
131. Entrants must be less than 40 years of age and extra points will be given for younger entrants.
132. A maximum of NZ$50,000 only may have been spent on acquiring and restoring the vehicle.
133. The Judges may at their discretion, request proofs of the age of the owner and their expenditure on the vehicle.
134. AREAS JUDGED: Engine compartment, interior, exterior, boot, wheels and tyres, lights. To see score sheets, click here.
135. Age related points of 1 point per year of age following manufacture/first registration anywhere in the world up to a maximum will be awarded in recognition of the greater challenge in presenting the condition of a car’s components, the older the car is. 
136. Prizes will be awarded as follows: 
137. A perpetual trophy to be engraved by the winner, an engraved keepsake trophy and a prize, will be awarded to the First Place winner.
138. An engraved keepsake trophy and prize will be awarded to the Second and Third place winners.
139. All prizes will be determined by the Committee.
140. Certificates will be presented to all prize winners.
141. ADDITIONAL RULES FOR THE MODIFIED CLASS 
142. Along with the usual vehicle cleanliness and presentation criteria, judges will be looking for build quality, ingenuity of design, overall aesthetics and engineering. 
143. Factory originality will not be judged in this class
144. All entrants must own their vehicle and may be members of a recognised car club, but this is not mandatory.
145. Vehicles  must  display a New Zealand Low Volume Certification plate, or equivalent Modification Declaration Certificate if the vehicle was modified prior to January 1992, along with current Registration and Warrant of Fitness.
146. In order for comprehensive judging to be possible the Owner must provide a detailed  information board identifying every modification on their vehicle. Failure to present such information will disqualify the entry. 
147. The owner of each vehicle or their delegated assistant must be in attendance while the vehicle is being judged.   
148. AREAS JUDGED: all areas, including but not limited to underside, engine compartment, interior, exterior, boot, wheels and tyres, lights.  
149. Scoring is performed by inspecting the modified vehicle for build quality, ingenuity of design and engineering, overall aesthetics, cleanliness and condition, awarding points up to the maximum points available for the particular area or component. Score sheets are as per the attached proforma at Annex A.
150. Age related points of 1 point per year of age following manufacture/first registration anywhere in the world, will be awarded in recognition of the greater challenge in presenting the condition of a car’s components, the older the car is.
151. Prizes will be awarded as follows: 
152. A perpetual trophy to be engraved by the winner, an engraved keepsake trophy and a prize, will be awarded to the First Place winner.
153. An engraved keepsake trophy and prize will be awarded to the Second and Third place winners.
154. All prizes will be determined by the Committee
155. Certificates will be presented to all prize winners
156. ADDITIONAL RULES FOR THE LITTLE LEGENDS CLASS
157. Rule 43 is waived
158. Vehicles must be between one eighth and one half scale
159. Entrants must be positioned with their class: Masters, Survivor or Modified
160. Rules for the three classes of Little Legends will be broadly in line with the above Masters, Survivor and Modified Classes
161. If the entrant wishes to gain points for the "Interaction with Children" criterion, the child must be present at judging time and available to answer questions
